Seemed like a good idea at the time

Josh Smith, Legislative Intern| Deseret News | Jan. 26, 2010 at 11:59 a.m.

Just two days into the session, legislative efficiency took a hit Tuesday as Sen. Howard Stephenson, R-Draper, abandoned his time-saving crusade.

Stephenson kicked off the Legislature¹s second day of floor time by announcing he had changed his mind about the pronunciation of his name.

Stephenson said his reversal, rare in politics, was based on pressure from unhappy relatives.

"I had some relatives who questioned my lineage in terms not appropriate for polite company," he said.

For now at least, Stephenson and Sen. Jerry Stevenson will be differentiated by their first initials.
