1-27-10 | Senate OKs changes to standardized testing | SL TribuneSenate OKs changes to standardized testingBrandon Loomis | Salt Lake Tribune | Updated: 01/27/2010 05:54:53 PM MSTThe Utah Senate passed a bill Wednesday meant to create a standardized testing system that more accurately reflects students' knowledge. SB16, sponsored by Sen. Howard Stephenson, R-Draper, would adopt an online testing procedure that asks progressively tougher or easier questions depending on the student's performance. The change will "give them credit for what they actually know in a real sense," Stephenson said, "instead of what happens to be on the test." The bill, which now goes to the House, would also drop the required annual Utah Performance Assessment System for Students [U-PASS] tests in third, fifth and eighth grade. Stephenson said research indicates children are tested too much. Please visit http://www.sltrib.com/news/ci_14278694 for more information.
