Ronald Reagan Remembered

I'm giving a copy of Ronald Reagan Remembered to every delegate in my area. It outlines the amazing and inspiring life of one of our greatest American Presidents. As you read and watch you will be reminded of the characteristics of truly great leadership which, I hope, will inspire each of us to be our best as well.

In every way, Ronald Reagan exemplified integrity, courage, intelligence … and love.

These are the attributes that moved our 40 th President to serve his country, care for his fellow man and confront evil head-on, often without the support of his advisors. These were on display that glorious day in at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate where he said, “Mr. Gorbachev: Tear down this wall!”

Today, we have our own walls in Utah that we must tear down.

How do we do this? I suggest we start by

  • Allowing families to choose how and where their children are educated;
  • Privatizing government services while ending the unfair competition of government agencies competing with the private sector;
  • Eliminating Redevelopment Agency tax breaks for retail establishments that create no additional wealth but rob $100 million annually from school and county budgets;
  • Removing punitive taxes that deter capital investment in higher-paying Utah jobs;
  • Giving Utah families a flat income tax which provides incentives for home ownership, not perpetual mortgage debt ; and
  • Reasserting the sovereignty of the states by challenging unfunded federal mandates and establishing a closer link between Utah officials and our two U.S. Senators who are charged by the U.S. Constitution with representation of the state.

Ronald Reagan was the Great Communicator. He taught us that government is the problem, not the solution. He did not depend on the media to carry his message. Instead, he bypassed the media and went directly to the American people and convinced them to lobby Congress to promote his agenda.

Ronald Reagan made us proud to be Americans. I hope we will be equally proud to be Utahns.
